Jeans all look similar on the hanger, but the details printed on the label and tag tell you a lot about how a pair will feel, fit and age. Here is what the most common terms mean.
Fabric weight
Denim weight is usually given in ounces per square yard. Lightweight denim, around 12 oz or less, is soft and comfortable from the first wear and suits warmer climates. Midweight denim, roughly 12 to 16 oz, is the most common range for everyday jeans. Heavyweight denim above 16 oz feels stiff at first and takes longer to break in, but many enthusiasts value how it develops character over time.
Raw versus washed
Raw (or dry) denim has not been washed after dyeing. It starts dark and stiff, and it fades gradually according to how you move, creating creases and wear patterns that are unique to the wearer. Washed denim has been laundered or treated at the factory, so it is softer and its size is more stable from the start. Raw denim may shrink after the first wash unless it is labelled as sanforized, which means it has been pre-shrunk.
Selvedge
Selvedge denim is woven on traditional narrow shuttle looms that create a finished, self-binding edge on each side of the fabric. On jeans, this shows up as a clean edge along the outseam, often with a coloured line. Selvedge is a mark of a particular manufacturing method rather than a guarantee of quality on its own, but it is popular with people who appreciate traditional construction.
Stretch content
Many modern jeans contain elastane (also sold under trade names such as Lycra or spandex). One or two percent adds comfort without changing the look much. Higher percentages give a closer, more flexible fit but can lose recovery over time and may bag at the knees.
Cotton type
Some labels highlight organic cotton, recycled cotton or long-staple varieties. Longer cotton fibres generally make smoother, stronger yarns, while recycled content reduces the need for new raw material.
Quick checklist
- Want comfort straight away? Choose washed, midweight denim with a little stretch.
- Want jeans that age with you? Consider raw, sanforized denim in 13 to 15 oz.
- Hot climate? Look for lighter weights and breathable cotton blends.
