Building a Capsule Wardrobe

How to plan a small, versatile wardrobe of pieces that work together.

Building a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a compact collection of clothing in which most pieces can be worn together. The goal is not a strict number of items but a wardrobe that is easier to dress from, wastes less and reflects the way you actually live.

Start with how you live

List what a typical week looks like: work, exercise, weekends, special occasions. Your wardrobe should reflect how much time you spend in each setting, not an idealised lifestyle.

Choose a colour palette

Pick two or three neutral base colours, such as navy, grey, black, beige or white, and add one or two accent colours that suit you. When most pieces share a palette, nearly everything can be mixed and matched.

Core building blocks

  • A few plain tops and T-shirts in your base colours
  • One or two shirts or blouses that can be dressed up or down
  • Well-fitting jeans and a pair of tailored trousers or a skirt
  • A knit jumper or cardigan for layering
  • One versatile jacket and one weather-appropriate coat
  • Two or three pairs of comfortable shoes that suit most outfits

Quality over quantity

With fewer items in rotation, each one is worn more often. It can make sense to spend a little more on pieces you wear constantly, choosing durable fabrics and solid construction. Calculating cost per wear, the price divided by the number of times you expect to wear it, is a useful way to compare options.

Edit seasonally

At the change of each season, review what you wore and what you did not. Store, donate or sell items that no longer fit your life, and note genuine gaps before shopping, so new purchases fill a real need.
