How to Care for Clothes So They Last Longer

Simple washing, drying and storage habits that keep clothes looking good for longer.

How to Care for Clothes So They Last Longer

The way clothes are washed, dried and stored has a big effect on how long they last. A few small habits can keep favourite pieces looking good for years and reduce how often you need to replace them.

Wash less, and wash cooler

Many items, such as jeans, jumpers and outer layers, do not need washing after every wear. Airing them out between wears is often enough. When you do wash, cooler temperatures are gentler on fibres and colours and use less energy. Modern detergents are designed to work well at 30°C or lower for everyday loads.

Sort and protect

  • Separate darks, lights and delicates to prevent colour transfer.
  • Turn printed, dark and textured garments inside out.
  • Close zips and fasten hooks so they do not snag other items.
  • Use mesh laundry bags for delicate fabrics and lingerie.

Dry with care

Tumble drying is one of the main causes of shrinkage and fabric wear; the lint in the filter is fibre lost from your clothes. Line drying or drying flat is gentler. Knitwear should always be dried flat to keep its shape.

Store properly

  • Fold knitwear instead of hanging it, which can stretch the shoulders.
  • Use shaped wooden or padded hangers for tailoring and coats.
  • Store seasonal clothing clean and dry, in breathable bags or boxes.
  • Cedar blocks or lavender sachets can help deter moths.

Repair early

Sewing on a loose button or fixing a small seam takes minutes, while waiting can turn a small problem into a large one. Fabric shavers remove pilling from jumpers, and a good local tailor can extend the life of quality garments.
